What It Takes to Be a Writer...

Being a writer is often romanticized as something that requires a special gift, a perfect setup, or a ready audience. In truth, it is far simpler—and far more accessible—than most people believe. You do not need permission, a fancy degree, or even a completed manuscript. You need only a few essential things.

First, you need a way to capture your thoughts. It can be a pen scratching across paper, the satisfying clack of a typewriter, or the quiet click of a computer keyboard. The tool itself does not matter. What matters is that you have something—anything—that lets you move the ideas in your head into a form you can see and shape. The means is simply the bridge between thought and page.

Second, you need the desire to let the words flow. Those words can be fiction or fact, drawn from lived experience or from the quiet longings of the heart. They do not have to be polished or profound at the start. They only need to move. When you feel the pull to put something down—whether a story, a memory, an observation, or a wish—you already possess the core of what makes a writer.

Third, release the pressure of perfection. First drafts are allowed to be messy, incomplete, even awkward. That is their job. Editing exists for a reason: it is the later stage where clarity, rhythm, and strength are built. Trying to make every sentence perfect on the first pass is a reliable way to stop writing altogether. Let the words come imperfectly. You can refine them afterward.

Finally, write first for yourself. When you create from your own truth, curiosity, or need, the work carries an authenticity that cannot be forced. And here is the quiet miracle: there will always be at least one other person who recognizes something of themselves in what you have written. You do not have to aim for everyone. Writing honestly for the one who matters most—you—often reaches farther than you expect.

That is all it takes. A means to record, a desire to express, the freedom to be imperfect, and the courage to begin with yourself. Everything else—craft, audience, publication—can grow from there. The only requirement that cannot be skipped is the decision to start.
